12 nights and 13 days: Broome – Buccaneer Archipelago – Bonaparte Archipelago – ex Broome returning to Broome
13th February 2017
Doug & Shelley’s Wet Season Explorer Cruise is a dawdle with Doug and Shelley, exploring and discovering new beaches, waterholes, caves, chasms, cliffs and all new excursions for Ahoy Buccaneers adventurers with the intention to discover new destinations to enhance future itineraries.
It’s a spectacular time to visit, especially by sea, when waterfalls burst over coastal cliffs, trees are full with leaves and glistening balls of spinifex cling to the shining faces of gorges. It’s the best time of the year to witness the power raging waterways, thundering waterfalls and swollen billabongs and renowned for summer storms and spectacular light shows. The Kimberley is timeless but far from static with 11 metre tides (the second largest in the world). Staggering quantities of water flood it, and empty from it, twice daily. Both tides and weather will dictate our journey and the passage plan, what we can guarantee at this time of year on the North West Coast by sea is spectacular and grand and the colours and scale of this remote last frontier Kimberley Wilderness will take your breath away. The tropical monsoons bring a dramatic edge to any holiday, but the wet season is also supremely beautiful as rugged red cliffs clash with dense green rainforests, and every aspect of the landscape becomes saturated with colour.
This holiday is for the more adventurous wanting to heighten the excitement of cruising to the remote Kimberley, at a time of year where the Archipelagos are at their most majestic- time to leave your watch at home. If we discover a great hidden swimming hole or geological stunning formations on a beach or cliff top, we may stop to explore for the day. This cruise will incorporate more shore excursions of exploration and in between times we will also seek out more fishing holes, inlets and rivers. So there should be plenty of time to fish for those that are keen to chase the elusive Barramundi and Mangrove Jack and the loved by all, Coral Trout.
The Wet Season Explorer Cruise is in the heart of the wet season and not for the faint hearted. We are seeking adventurous spirits to join us on our explorations in remote North West Kimberley on a journey of discovery. With the possibility of rough weather, low pressure systems and in cyclone season, there may be a need to seek shelter in the case of a severe weather event, however contingency plans will be in place to ensure that we can seek shelter from a storm should the need arise. The weather will be humid (averages are low of 26 and high 33 degrees), however it is always cooler on the water than land and at this time of year the chance of rainfall is high to cool things down!
On the plus side, the electrical storms can be spectacular and sunrise/sunsets very much enhanced with storm clouds and lightening adding another kaleidoscope to the scenery.
Please note we will not be visiting the Horizontal Falls or the destinations well visited by all the cruise companies. We will go to the Buccaneer and the Bonaparte Archipelago’s and explore farther afield than just the main stream destinations. If this sounds like your kind of adventure holiday then call us now!
