Broome to Darwin Cruise (13 days)

12 nights and 13 days: Broome – Darwin

8 October 2018

This is the ultimate cruise incorporating all of the Kimberley Coast between Broome and Darwin known as the Buccaneer, Bonaparte Archipelagos and the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf. This is a one way cruise. The Kimberley is blessed with a rich pioneering and indigenous history, offering visitors the holiday experience of a lifetime. Deep gorges, awe-inspiring water falls, the ideal climate and clear night skies bursting with stars, makes the Kimberley a land to be discovered.

Cruise Highlight: Prince Regent River from Boab UAS.

In between Broome and Darwin there are approximately 2000 islands. Fishing, swimming in fresh waterholes, beach combing, exploring aboriginal art and walks are all on the menu in some of the remotest parts of the Kimberley. This cruise takes you exploring in the Buccaneer and Bonaparte destinations and the top area of Joseph Bonaparte Gulf as far down as King George River and Falls. Places we visit will include the Horizontal Falls a must do, other places on the proposed itinerary may include but not limited to Montgomery Reef, Silica Beach, Crocodile Creek, Silvergull Creek, Ruby Falls or Sapphire Falls, Hiro Bay, Camden Sound (home and the largest breeding ground in the world for the humpback whales), Kings Cascades, Cathedral Falls, Bigge Island, Hunter River, Vansittart Bay, Jar Island, Osbourne Island, King George Falls, along with the fascinating history and remains of the DC3 plane crash site. Each adventure will be different according to tides and weather.

Cruise Hightlights: Hiro Bay & Petrified Warriors from Boab UAS.

The Bonaparte Archipelago in WA’s remote Kimberley region, is a maze of islands, inlets, peninsulas and rivers. At the start of the wet season in October, the land is awash and teeming with life, it’s colour and scale conspire to take ones breath away. Its diverse coastline is timeless but far from static with 11 metre tides (the second largest in the world). Staggering quantities of water flood it, and empty from it, twice daily with the tides. Its distant location has meant it has remained an unspoilt and remarkably pristine location to explore and experience. These islands are located roughly offshore from King Sound in the Buccaneer archipelago to Kalooma Bay in Joseph Bonaparte Gulf, an area that is largely uninhabited except for a few tourist camps. View Windjina and Bradshaw Aboriginal art hidden in caves dotted throughout the Kimberley Coastline and explore the stories dating back thousands of years that accompany them. For those that are keen on fishing there will be plenty of opportunities to fish tidal creeks for Barramundi, Threadfin Salmon, Mangrove Jack or try your luck at Pelagic fishing throughout your cruise.

The Archipelago is an awesome wilderness and no description can do it justice. Distance and size are hard to judge here, as are the colours to comprehend. Whereas Buccaneer Archipelago was named in commemoration of the British adventurer William Dampier, who visited the coast in 1688, Bonaparte Archipelago honours French First Consul, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). Its name was bestowed by French explorer Nicolas Baudin, who charted the coast and explored the islands in August 1801 as part of a major French expedition of scientific discovery around the shores of Australia. Joseph Bonaparte Gulf was named after Joseph Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon and King of Napes (1806) and also by Nicholas Baudin in 1803.
